A seminal book on dating and identification of Tibetan paintings.
Beautifully presented in two volumes, Taklung Painting: A Study in Chronology establishes a reliable foundation for assigning dates to nearly one hundred paintings associated with Taklung Monastery in central Tibet and its sister monastery, Riwoche in eastern Tibet. Using visual lineages (the succession of teachers represented in the top, side, and, occasionally, the bottom registers of paintings), inscriptions, narrative scenes (in which principal structures in the Taklung Monastery compound may be linked to specific dates), and style analysis, the author identifies fundamental parameters that help to create firm chronological designations for these c. twelfth to mid-sixteenth century paintings. This essential two-volume set includes more than 800 images, illustrating Taklung paintings in vivid detail, pointing out key visual comparisons and deciphering their many inscriptions.

THE ROYAL HISTORY OF SIKKIM: A Chronicle of the House of Namgyal
As Narrated in Tibetan by THEIR HIGHNESSES CHOGYAL THUTOB NAMGYAL and GYALMO YESHE DOLMA, Based upon the Preliminary Translation by Kazi Dawasamdup
Corrected, Supplemented and Thoroughly Revised by John A. Ardussi Anna Balikci Denjongpa, and Per K. Sørensen
Under the Patronage of Her Majesty GYALYUM KESANG CHOEDEN WANGCHUCK Queen Mother to HM the Fourth King of Bhutan
The Royal History of Sikkim was written in Tibetan at the turn of the 19th century by the then ruler, Chogyal Thutob Namgyal and his Tibetan Queen-consort Yeshe Dolma. It is a unique work of local history, presenting an alternative narrative to accounts of their Himalayan state written by contemporary British officials arguing the viewpoints of imperial India.
The small mountain kingdom of Sikkim was founded in the mid-17th century as an ethnically diverse Buddhist monarchy intimately tied to Tibet. The Royal History of Sikkim dramatically tells the story of how, over the following centuries, their country survived pressure from more powerful states on all sides. Finally, during the 19th century, Sikkim came within the protective orbit of British India, whose rulers would act on Sikkim’s behalf against its enemies only if the Chogyal adhered to their mandates to serve as a commercial gateway into Tibet.
A preliminary translation of this important work of Himalayan history was written in 1909 – 1910 by the Sikkimese scholar Kazi Dawasamdup, well-known to Tibet specialists. However, following the demise of the royal couple, and as political alliances changed, the original Tibetan manuscript was set aside until being first published in 2003. The English translation, however, was never completed or published until now.

There is no better illustration of the radical transformative power of the ancient Tibetan contemplative teachings of Dzogchen than the extraordinary phenomenon of bodily disappearance or “rainbow body”, which is considered its ultimate fruit. In this groundbreaking study of rainbow body in the Bön tradition, which is the first of its kind in a western language, the neophyte reader is guided into the profound insights of Dzogchen, while all the components required to understand this most mysterious and enigmatic of phenomena are laid out gently and methodically.
Illustrated by unique thangkas commissioned especially for this study, the book’s emphasis is on clarity of exposition. Simple enough for the layman, but detailed enough to do justice to these ancient and subtle traditions, Rainbow Body serves both as an introduction to Bön Dzogchen, and also as a pioneering study of Tibetan textual sources related to the phenomenon of rainbow body. It is offered to the public in the hope that as many people as possible may benefit from the profundity of this ancient wisdom. For as Loel Guinness states in his preface, “Dzogchen is not just for monks. It is as suitable for the businessman, the academic, the adventurer, or the practitioner. The insights of Dzogchen are relevant for all”.

The monastic complex of Alchi is undoubtably one of the most important and fascinating monuments preserved in the Himalayas. With its earliest monuments dating from the late twelfth to the mid-thirteenth centuries, it provides unique insight into the Buddhist culture flourishing at that time.
Through a detailed analysis of the architecture, sculptures and murals in their context, their interrelationship to each other and to Tibetan textual sources likely known at the time the publication offers a deeper understanding of the monuments religious environment. A reassessment of some of the inscriptions preserved at the site provides new insights into the historical circumstances of the temples construction.
This publication builds on and includes an updated version of the Sumtsek book by Roger Goepper, covers all early remains of the Alchi Choskhor, and still relies on the quality of Jaroslav Poncar’s early documentation for all main monuments. Holger Neuwirth and Carmen Auer contributed on the architecture and all plans, and Rob Linrothe and Nils Martin contributed new studies on the lineage and foundation inscription of the Sumtsek respectively.

]]>THE LIFE OF A GREAT BONPO MASTER: The Biography of Yongdzin Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche
Edited by Charles Ramble
From his early childhood in East Tibet, the boy who would later come to be known as Yongdzin Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche wanted nothing more than to devote his life to meditation and spiritual discovery, and to learn the ancient wisdom of Bon from Tibet’s greatest masters. His life changed when, as a young apprentice, he accompanied a team of mural painters to Central Tibet for a commission at a famous Bonpo monastery. When the team left, he remained behind, took monastic vows and soon rose to become the senior teacher (lopön) of Menri Monastery. However, the quiet life of the monastery was soon shattered by political upheavals and the persecution of all religious institutions by the new Communist regime. Lopön Tenzin Namdak was shot and arrested, but made a dramatic escape to Nepal, from where he continued on to India. The challenge that he now faced was nothing less than ensuring the survival of the Bon religion itself. Through an exemplary life of hard work, teaching, meditating and writing, Lopön Tenzin Namdak provided the inspiration for fellow-lamas, disciples and well-wishers to join the quest to establish Bon on a firm footing in exile. The religion now has a growing following in many countries, and is once again flourishing in its Tibetan homeland.
This work is a compilation of different accounts of the life of Yongdzin Lopön Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche. The core is a Tibetan language account based on Yongdzin Rinpoche’s own diaries and on interviews with numerous people, composed by a committee of his disciples under the direction of Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche, the abbot of Triten Norbutse Monastery in Nepal. That short work of six chapters was published in 2005 to mark Yongdzin Rinpoche’s 80th birthday. An English translation of the Tibetan text was later made in Dharamsala by Dhondup Tsering in 2007. The present work is an expanded account based on the original biography and supplemented with material from extensive interviews conducted with Yongdzin Rinpoche, as well a record of his activities in the years following the publication of the original work. The biography is followed by a glossary of Tibetan terms and the names of places, people and teachings that appear in the work.
